MECHANISM OF ACTION OF OVRAL L:
Norgestrel is a synthetic form of progestin, which inhibits pregnancy by modifying the womb and cervical mucus so that it becomes more difficult for an egg to meet the sperm. Therefore, it inhibits implantation. Ethinyl Estradiol is the synthetic form of estrogens, which diffuses into their target cells and then binds with a protein receptor. Target cells are the female reproductive tract, the hypothalamus, the mammary gland, and the pituitary. It increases the synthesis of thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and other serum proteins and blocks the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) coming from the anterior pituitary. Thus it prevents ovulation and hence fertilization.
